Life is never flat

We often hear these words from a snack advertisement that used to be shown on TV when we were kids, and this phrase has been a personal reflection for me lately. I feel that life is always full of surprises, constantly giving us unexpected surprises at every moment.

Life can be very unpredictable. Just when we think we have solved a difficult problem and are happy that it’s over, something surprising happens — a new problem arises that we have to solve again. It feels like we are living just to solve the problems that come our way.

Some of my friends say that what makes life better is when we can solve problems that seem difficult to overcome. There’s a sense of happiness, relief, and pride. But, would living without any problems also be enjoyable?

Since that discussion, those words have always been on my mind. Basically, I agree with what my friend said, and the question I often ask other friends I meet is: what if we lived without any problems? Would it be as enjoyable? Or would it make life more boring?

Basically, everyone I meet gives unique and different answers, providing new perspectives on how I should view the world. But what I can conclude from all the answers from the friends I interviewed is that they agree a flat life is not enjoyable. They agree with the statement my friend made earlier, and even before asking them, I also agreed with my friend’s statement.

Reflecting on what I’ve experienced lately, I feel there are too many, even a lot of problems that have come into my life. Initially, I was very uncomfortable with this, but I only started to feel happy when I managed to solve the problems, from the smallest ones to the most crucial ones.

And, I just realized the meaning of the snack advertisement that always appeared on TV when we were kids. It means that an ordinary life would be very boring, unlike a life that is like a roller coaster. When we’re at the top heading downward, we feel an exciting pressure, and the same goes for the reverse. If a roller coaster only had a linear track, with no ups and downs, the sensation wouldn’t be as enjoyable.

And I feel that a life where everything seems fine isn’t that enjoyable. It even makes us fearful, anticipating that something bad will happen to us. Or perhaps because there’s no passion in living, we end up feeling that life is pointless, like we’re dead even though we’re alive.

As I keep moving through this unpredictable journey, I’ve realized that life is never flat. It’s a lively, always-changing experience that keeps us alert. Embracing the highs and lows, the uncertainties and surprises, has made my life richer and more meaningful.

So, if you ever find yourself feeling stuck or overwhelmed, remember that life is a journey, not a destination. Embrace the twists and turns, and trust that each experience is shaping you into the person you are meant to be. Life may never be flat, but that’s what makes it beautiful.
